The demand for vegan and cruelty-free products is rising every year as people become increasingly conscientious about the ingredients and manufacturing processes behind the items they purchase. Reed diffusers are no exception to this demand. There are a number of things that can affect whether or not a reed diffuser is vegan friendly, these include the fragrance oils, diffuser base, reeds and also the packaging used. Let's break down each of these components to assess their vegan-friendliness.
Fragrance Oil & Diffuser Base
The primary concern when determining the vegan-friendliness of a reed diffuser lies in the liquid itself. Some fragrance oils may contain animal-derived ingredients or have been tested on animals. However, many manufacturers are now producing cruelty-free and vegan fragrance oils, derived from plant-based sources or synthetic alternatives. When shopping for reed diffusers, look for products that explicitly state that their fragrance oils are vegan friendly. This information is often found on the product label or the manufacturer's website. Here at KIN we try to stay as eco-conscious as possible. The fragrance oils we use in our diffusers are all vegan friendly, cruelty free and paraben free. The diffuser base we use is perfumers alcohol which is also vegan friendly.
Reeds
The reeds are the porous sticks that absorb the fragrance oil and release it into the air. The reeds themselves can be made from a wide variety of materials. Our reed diffusers use rattan reeds, they are made from a type of palm plant which is sustainable and biodegradable, making them inherently vegan. Manufacturers may sometimes use other materials like bamboo for reeds, but these are also plant-derived and thus vegan-friendly. On the other hand some diffusers use fibre reeds which are generally made using plastic, making them non eco-friendly. It's always worth checking what material the reeds are made from before you order a reed diffuser.
Packaging
The vessel or container that holds the fragrance oil and reeds is usually made of glass or another non-animal-based material. This component is generally vegan, but it's always a good idea to check the product details or contact the manufacturer for confirmation. For our diffusers we use amber glass bottles which are recyclable, and an aluminium screw top. The only piece of plastic in our diffusers is a small tab within the screw top, which seals the lid and prevents the diffuser oil from leaking during postage (if you have any ideas for alternatives please let us know, we're trying to substitute this to make our product fully plastic free). In terms of packaging, companies use a wide variety of solutions, it's always worth checking what method your chosen company uses to deliver their goods to ensure that it alines with your values. We spent a lot of time researching the most eco-friendly ways of delivering our diffusers to you. Our packaging consists of a cardboard box, biodegradable packing peanuts and paper tape.
Reed diffusers can be a vegan-friendly choice for those who prioritise cruelty-free and plant-based living. By paying attention to the fragrance oil, reeds and packaging, consumers can confidently select reed diffusers that align with their ethical values.
