Are reed diffusers safe for pets?

Being an animal lover, I often find myself questioning whether things are safe to use around pets, reed diffusers are no exception. In this blog post, we'll dive into the potential risks involved in their use in homes with pets.

Reed diffusers consist of a fragrance oil mixture and porous reeds that absorb the oil, diffusing the scent into the surrounding air. This method comes with a number of considerations involving the safety of their use around animals. These risks include:

Fragrance Oils

Some fragrance oils may contain ingredients that can be harmful to pets. Essential oils, in particular, can pose risks, as certain oils are known to be toxic to animals. The fragrance oils we use for our diffusers here at KIN have been created in line with IFRA standards, which ensures their safety for use around humans, however we recommend checking with a veterinarian if you have any concerns about their use around animals.

Ingestion

Curious pets might be tempted to investigate reed diffusers and could potentially ingest the liquid. This can lead to gastrointestinal issues and other health problems.

Knocking Over Diffusers

Pets may accidentally knock over reed diffusers. In addition to the mess, this could lead to direct contact with the fragrance oil, which may be harmful to their skin or fur.

Tips for Safe Use:

Choose Pet-Friendly Fragrances

Choose a reed diffuser that includes a pet-friendly fragrance, or check with your veterinarian that your diffuser of choice is safe to use around your pets.

Thoughtful Placement

Consider the placement of reed diffusers in areas that are less accessible to pets. High shelves or out of reach countertops can help minimise the risk of pets coming into direct contact with the diffuser.

Monitor Pet Behaviour

Pay attention to your pets behaviour when using reed diffusers. If you notice any signs of discomfort or irritation, such as sneezing, coughing, or changes in behaviour, you should relocate or remove the diffuser from you home.

While reed diffusers can add a pleasant fragrance to your home, it's essential to prioritise the safety of your furry family members. Choosing pet-friendly fragrances, strategic placement, and by monitoring your pets behaviour can ensure that your chosen reed diffuser creates a harmonious living space whilst guaranteeing the well-being of your pets. Always consult with your veterinarian if you have specific concerns or if your pet exhibits any unusual symptoms.
